  Remember the last time gas was at $4+ back in the early 2010s? And how oil was at $120 a barrel? Now look at this time around. This time, when oil hit $100 we were already hitting $4. There's a 20% premium to it, which is a bit odd because gas station costs haven't risen 20% in 10 years. Then look at any oil company. Many of them are reporting record profits. Can't make record profits unless your margins go down, and the easiest way to do that is revenues go up while costs stay the same.

Those producers haven't increased capacity since cutting it at the beginning of the pandemic because, surprise, it's not as profitable to spend money as it is to jack up prices on thin supply with high demand.   The price of gas under Trump before the pandemic was about $2.54/gallon. Before the pandemic we were energy independent because offshore drilling was booming. During the pandemic, those companies basically bailed and left things in bad enough disrepair they haven't gone back. It has nothing to do with Keystone.

When demand tanked at the beginning of the pandemic OPEC cut supply and they didn't ramp back up as demand grew again. That's why Biden authorized some from the national supply while telling off OPEC for not increasing their production still.
